The local police department is telling people not to make the same mistake as the victims, who left their cars unlocked with the keys inside, police said.

A Mercedes and a Volkswagen were stolen early Monday morning on the 1200 block of San Raymundo Road. Earlier on Sunday night, a Jeep and a Toyota were stolen on the 500 block of Ravencourt Road and the 500 block of Roehampton Road.

"The common factor in all four of the vehicle thefts was that the vehicles were unlocked and the keys were left inside," the Hillsborough Police Department said.

HPD officers are reviewing surveillance footage as they try to identify the suspects. HPD is asking anyone in the area to review footage in case it has relevant information. Anyone with information is asked to call (650) 375-7470.

"The Hillsborough Police Department is committed to the safety and security of our community and will continue to work diligently to bring those responsible for these crimes to justice,” said HPD Chief Nelson Corteway

Man arrested for breaking into multiple homes in Livermore: police https://www.kron4.com/news/bay-area/man-arrested-for-breaking-into-multiple-homes-in-livermore-police/ Tue, 25 Jun 2024 03:38:59 +0000 https://www.kron4.com/?p=1831339 (KRON) -- A man was arrested for breaking into multiple homes in Livermore overnight on Saturday, the Livermore Police Department said. Before 1 a.m., officers responded to a report of a man trespassing on a home on Mocho Street. He was seen in the backyard.

The man was trying to break into the home via the back sliding door, according to police. Once the homeowner confronted the man, the suspect ran away.

About an hour later, there was another report of a break-in at a home on El Dorado Drive, which is about a half mile away from Mocho Street. It was determined to be the same man from the break-in an hour earlier.

The suspect previously lived at the El Dorado Drive house, and the current homeowner knows the suspect, police said. The suspect, identified as 29-year-old Livermore resident Alfredo Macedonia, was later found in the parking lot of nearby Joe Michell School.

Macedonia had methamphetamine when he was found, police said. He was arrested and booked into Santa Rita Jail for residential burglary, possession of a controlled substance and aggravated trespassing.

Newsom sends kids to Marin for school, will split time in Sacramento https://www.kron4.com/news/bay-area/newsom-sends-kids-to-marin-for-school-will-split-time-in-sacramento/ Tue, 25 Jun 2024 02:58:44 +0000 https://www.kron4.com/?p=1831321 (KRON) -- California Gov. Gavin Newsom and his family will be spending more time in the Bay Area soon. KRON4 confirmed that the family will be splitting time between Sacramento and Marin County this upcoming school year.

"To ensure continuity in their children’s education, the family will split their time between Sacramento and Marin heading into the coming academic year," a statement from the governor's office said.

Newsom currently owns a home in Fair Oaks, which is northwest of Sacramento. His kids will stay with family members when they spend the night in Marin, KRON4 has learned.

Newsom and his wife Jennifer Siebel Newsom have four children. Siebel Newsom said in May that she had to pull one of her kids out of school due to bullying.

The governor, of course, has strong Bay Area ties. He was born and raised in San Francisco, attended Santa Clara University and served as Sam Francisco's mayor from 2004-2011.

He previously lived in the Marin County suburb of Kentfield when he was the Lieutenant Governor of California, the Huffington Post reported. He reportedly later sold that home.

Newsom is not the only California governor to keep some form of residence in the Bay Area. Jerry Brown kept his Oakland home while serving the position.

Giants to all wear No. 24 in first home game since Willie Mays' passing https://www.kron4.com/mlb/giants/giants-to-all-wear-no-24-in-first-home-game-since-willie-mays-passing/ Mon, 24 Jun 2024 22:58:18 +0000 https://www.kron4.com/?p=1831127 SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- In their first home game since the passing of Willie Mays, the San Francisco Giants will wear No. 24 for Monday night's game against the Chicago Cubs, the team announced on X. The entire team will wear the number of the greatest player in franchise history.

All Giants personnel in uniform will be wearing 24 on the back of their jersey, which includes players, manager Bob Melvin and other assistant coaches.

Melvin said the No. 24 should be retired by all 30 MLB teams, according to a report by the SF Chronicle's John Shea. As of now, only No. 42 is universally retired, the number worn by Jackie Robinson.

Mays died on Tuesday, and the Giants have not won a game since. San Francisco is currently on a five-game losing streak after two losses to the Cubs and another three to the St. Louis Cardinals.

For the past few days, fans have left flowers in front of Mays' statue outside of Oracle Park. More fans are expected to honor Mays ahead of Monday night's matchup against the Cubs, a 6:45 first-pitch game.

The death of Mays impacted the entire baseball world -- not just the Giants organization. Mays is considered one of, if not, the greatest baseball player ever. The Giants have been in the spotlight since Mays passed.

Last Thursday, San Francisco played at the historic Rickwood Field -- a venue that was once the home for many Negro League games back in the 20th Century. The game was nationally televised, and Giants-Cardinals was the center of the baseball universe that night in Birmingham, Ala.

"The rest of the baseball world knows the legend, what he's meant to the game," Melvin said Saturday during the team's road trip in St. Louis. "It's been a tough week in the fact he did pass, the timing of it with Rickwood and all. He was there in spirit."

San Francisco is coming off a 5-3 road loss to the Cardinals on Sunday.

The Giants are currently 36-42 and stand in fourth place in the NL West standings, 11.5 games back behind the division-leading Los Angeles Dodgers. San Francisco is three games back from the final NL Wild Card spot.

VTA train partly derails in San Jose https://www.kron4.com/news/bay-area/vta-train-partly-derails-in-san-jose/ Mon, 24 Jun 2024 22:47:42 +0000 https://www.kron4.com/?p=1831185 (BCN) -- A Valley Transportation Authority light rail car slipped off the tracks on Monday afternoon while attempting to switch directions, but none of the passengers aboard were injured, officials said.

The derailment has closed Capitol Light Rail Station, and Blue Line passengers will have access to a bus bridge between Curtner and Santa Teresa until further notice.

The derailment happened about 12:40 p.m. as a train with two cars was trying to switch from southbound to northbound at the Capitol Light Rail Station.

The train had just picked up 10 passengers at the Capitol Station and was headed north when the second car derailed, according to VTA spokesperson Stacey Hendler Ross.

The passengers were transferred to the Curtner Light Rail station via bus bridge to continue their trip north.

Until the derailment, the Capitol Station was the southernmost station on the Blue Line currently operating, as the stations south of Capitol are being served by bus bridges while the line is undergoing track maintenance until July 1.

The station is located near Capitol Expressway and Highway 87 in San Jose.

VTA crews are awaiting equipment that will lift the train back onto the track before the station can be opened again.

Oakland mayor's attorney quits after being surprised by news conference https://www.kron4.com/news/bay-area/oakland-mayor-thaos-attorney-withdraws-as-counsel/ Mon, 24 Jun 2024 22:29:34 +0000 https://www.kron4.com/?p=1831139 (KRON) -- Embattled Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao's attorney has resigned as her counsel after the mayor gave a press conference Monday without informing him. Tony Brass, a high-profile attorney who also represents accused Bob Lee killer Nima Momeni, was retained as Mayor Thao's counsel late last week after the Federal Bureau of Investigation raided her Oakland home.

"I have officially withdrawn as Sheng Thao's counsel," Brass told Bay City News, via text message.

The mayor remained silent for several days, declining to speak about the raid or to address a mass shooting in Oakland Wednesday, in which 15 people were shot at a Juneteenth celebration. On Monday, she broke her silence, addressing the shooting briefly before launching into a fiery, and at times emotional statement about the raid.

In the statement, which KRON4.com has learned she did not inform her attorney about ahead of time, Mayor Thao implied the FBI raid was connected to an ongoing recall effort against her. She also at times suggested that there were "radical rightwing forces" and a "handful of billionaires" from San Francisco and Piedmont "hellbent" on ousting her from office.

She provided no evidence to support those claims.

Prior to the news conference, a staff member for Mayor Thao told media she would not be taking any questions because her attorney advised her not to. However, Brass told KRON4 that he did not know there was going to be a news conference until he saw it on the news.

KRON4 News reached out to Mayor Thao's office and was told that the mayor informed Tony Brass she was changing attorneys on Saturday.

Brass responded to the mayor's office's statement, calling it absolutely untrue and telling KRON4 he received no communication from Thao on Saturday about changing attorneys. He reiterated to KRON4 that he informed the mayor of his decision to withdraw on Monday morning.

Thao sent KRON4 the following statement:

"I appreciate Tony Brass for providing me with initial legal guidance. He helped me better understand the investigation and my legal options. Over the weekend, I obtained new legal counsel and thanked Mr. Brass for his counsel. I will share the name of my new counsel once agreements are finalized."

Within the last seven days, police have reported four people have died in a series of separate and unrelated shootings.

The latest shooting in the city happened late Sunday night, according to the Richmond Police Department (RPD). Around 11:30 p.m., officers responded to a shooting on the 3400 block of Richmond Parkway.

Two victims were later located -- each suffering from at least one gunshot wound. One victim died at the scene. The second victim was taken to the hospital and is "in stable but critical condition," RPD said.

RPD investigators stated Sunday night's shooting doesn't appear to be related to the homicides that happened on Tuesday, June 18 and Wednesday, June 19.

The shooting happened at an apartment complex. An image captured at the scene (below) shows police presence as areas of the apartment building are blocked off with police tape.

As of Monday afternoon, no arrests have been made in connection to Sunday night's shooting. RPD says anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the department at 510-620-6616 or call 510-307-8177 if they want to remain anonymous.

The last-place San Jose Earthquakes fire coach Luchi Gonzalez https://www.kron4.com/sports/the-last-place-san-jose-earthquakes-fire-coach-luchi-gonzalez/ Mon, 24 Jun 2024 21:15:52 +0000 https://www.kron4.com/?p=1831029 SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — The San Jose Earthquakes have fired coach Luchi Gonzalez after the team won only three of its first 19 games this season.

Assistant coach Ian Russell was promoted to interim head coach on Monday, with assistants Steve Ralston, Luciano Fusco and Adin Brown remaining in their current roles.

“We want to thank Luchi for his hard work, commitment to the club and professionalism,” general manager Chris Leitch said in a statement. “Luchi and his staff have worked extremely hard the past year and a half, but we have not met expectations this year as a club. We felt that we needed to make a change, and it was in the best interests of the club to move in a different direction.”

The Earthquakes have the worst record in the MLS at 3-14-2 and are coming off a 6-2 loss to Los Angeles FC on Saturday.

Gonzalez took over the Quakes following the 2022 World Cup, where he served as an assistant to the U.S. team. He led San Jose to the playoffs in 2023 before losing to Sporting Kansas City in a shootout. He had a 13-24-16 record in his tenure.

The 48-year-old Russell has been an assistant coach for parts of 11 seasons overall with San Jose and had a stint as interim head coach for two matches in 2014. He helped the Quakes win the Supporters’ Shield in 2012 as an assistant coach.

He also spent four years as head coach of Reno 1868 FC, the Quakes’ affiliate in the United Soccer League. He made the playoffs all four seasons with Reno.

“Ian is a very experienced coach who knows our club better than anyone,” Leitch said. “He had a great run as head coach at Reno for four years, winning a lot of games and making the playoffs every season. We’re confident that he’s ready to lead us."

Russell also played in 131 games for the Quakes between 2000-05 and was part of MLS Cup champions in 2001 and 2003.

The Hilton Oakland Airport hotel, which has operated in the area since 1968, will cease operations on or about Aug. 28, KRON4.com has confirmed.

The Port of Oakland, which operates the airport, told KRON4 it had received notice of the hotel's closing from Park Hotels & Resorts.

"We understand that the hospitality sector continues to be negatively impacted by larger economic trends post pandemic, and as the owner of this site the Port will be seeking the best Port use for this property moving forward," said the Port in a statement. "The Port will work with the facility operators and the City of Oakland about assistance that can be offered to employees who might be affected by this closure."

The Port did not provide any stated reason behind the closing. However, several businesses in the area, including In-N-Out, have closed in recent months, with many citing high crime and public safety concerns.

'I have done nothing wrong': Mayor Thao speaks for first time since FBI raid https://www.kron4.com/news/bay-area/where-is-sheng-thao-oakland-residents-call-for-mayor-to-resign/ Mon, 24 Jun 2024 16:38:27 +0000 https://www.kron4.com/?p=1830661 OAKLAND, Calif. (KRON) -- A fiery Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao spoke publicly Monday morning for the first time since her home was raided by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and a mass shooting occurred at Lake Merritt last week. In the face of increasingly louder calls for her to resign, the mayor proclaimed her innocence and suggested the raid might be linked to a recall campaign she said was backed by "a handful of billionaires" in San Francisco and Piedmont that were "hellbent" on running her out of office.

"I plan to be one hundred percent transparent and cooperate with the investigation," said Mayor Thao, who struck a defiant tone at the news conference. "I have done nothing wrong."

The mayor said she had not been charged with any crimes and was confident that she would not be charged. She called the FBI raid "troubling" and said she wanted to know what probable cause the FBI had in raiding her home.

About a dozen federal agents spent around five hours in the mayor's home Thursday before leaving with multiple boxes. Three other locations were also raided by the FBI that same morning, including the home of David and Andy Duong, who partially own and operate California Waste Solutions, the city's recycling service.

Thursday's federal raid came the day after 15 people were shot following a Juneteenth celebration at Lake Merritt.

In Monday's address, the mayor repeatedly implied the raid on her home was somehow linked to the recall effort against her. She also suggested there had been a coordinated effort behind the scenes and repeatedly made reference to "right wing forces" working against her.

Mayor Thao suggested that if she were "rich" or had gone to an "elite school" she would not have been subjected to the raid.

Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao makes remarks to the media at Oakland City Hall in Oakland, Calif., Monday, June 24, 2024, following an FBI raid on her home and three others last week. (Jessica Christian/San Francisco Chronicle via AP)

"I want to know how the TV cameras knew to show up on my street early in the morning," Thao said. "I have a lot of questions and I want answers, we all will get answers."

More than once, the mayor said she wanted "answers" in the prepared address, after which she took no questions. She also referred to the recall effort against her as a "waste of time" that was paid for by "a small group of billionaires."

Over the weekend, the group behind efforts to recall Thao gathered outside Oakland City Hall. The group, which has gathered more than 40,000 signatures, called for Thao to be recalled. Following last week's shooting and the FBI raid, recall proponents have called for Thao to resign immediately.

On Monday, she made it clear she had no intention of doing so.

"I'm not going down like that," Thao said. "I will not be bullied, I will not be disparaged, I will not be threatened out of this office."

Bay Bridge sideshow involving fireworks, 150 vehicles halts traffic: CHP https://www.kron4.com/news/bay-area/bay-bridge-sideshow-involving-fireworks-150-vehicles-halts-traffic-chp/ Mon, 24 Jun 2024 05:11:11 +0000 https://www.kron4.com/?p=1830222 SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- A sideshow overnight Sunday halted traffic on the Bay Bridge, according to California Highway Patrol (CHP). Just before 2 a.m., CHP officers were breaking up a group of sideshow participants on the westbound side of the bridge near the toll plaza.

As officers were responding to that call, CHP received more calls about another sideshow happening on the eastbound lanes. Authorities spotted the sideshows and spotted more than 150 vehicles involved.

Cars and pedestrians were blocking all eastbound lanes, just east of Treasure Island, CHP said. Traffic was blocked for about 30 minutes. Around 2:21 a.m., the crowd of sideshow participants started to disperse.

Sideshow participants also fired illegal fireworks into the sky (see video above). CHP officers were not able to respond to the scene promptly as they were blocked by the sideshow traffic on the Bay Bridge, authorities said.

CHP Makes Arrests

After the crowd began to disperse, CHP conducted enforcement stops as cars were driving eastbound on the bridge. One vehicle stop resulted in a CHP chase that ended up in the Oakland area. The suspect vehicle's occupants were arrested after spike strips brought the car to a stop.

Later, a suspect vehicle was involved in a hit-and-run crash. The suspect was arrested at a gas station in Oakland, according to CHP. It turns out the vehicle was stolen and had stolen license plates registered to another vehicle.

As of Monday evening, the traffic enforcement stops led to three arrests, according to CHP.

"The CHP takes these types of reckless and illegal driving exhibitions seriously," CHP Public Information Officer Mark Andrews wrote. "Additional follow-up investigation will be conducted in regards to this incident, and appropriate enforcement actions will be taken against any persons or vehicles identified in this illegal and improper behavior."

CHP says it is actively investigating this incident. The law enforcement agency requests any witnesses to send video from the scene to the CHP San Francisco Area office.

'Once-in-a-lifetime experience': SF Giants reflect on emotional week of Willie Mays’ death, Rickwood Field game https://www.kron4.com/mlb/giants/sf-giants-reflect-on-emotional-week-of-willie-mays-death-rickwood-field-game/ Mon, 24 Jun 2024 02:06:10 +0000 https://www.kron4.com/?p=1829476 ST. LOUIS (KRON) — The San Francisco Giants went 2-4 last calendar week. However, remove the 54 innings that were played on the baseball field, and it was a historic last few days for the franchise.

Most notably, the greatest player in franchise history, Willie Mays, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 93.

Two days later, the Giants played against the St. Louis Cardinals at Rickwood Field in Birmingham, Ala. in a nationally televised contest which the Giants lost 6-5. Rickwood Field was the home of the Negro League's Black Barons -- a team Willie Mays played for before becoming a Giant. The story of MLB couldn’t be told without mentioning the venue.

Putting the on-field results aside, Manager Bob Melvin and the Giants took a moment to reflect on the week it was for the franchise. Before Saturday's game in St. Louis, KRON4 asked Melvin how much he has thought of how historic the past week has been.

"Quiet a bit," Melvin told reporters in the dugout pregame. "Willie Mays is the Giants. We all understand that. Most of our guys have had experience with him, know who he is as a person, what he brings. The rest of the baseball world knows the legend -- what he's meant to the game.

"It's been a tough week in the fact he did pass, the timing of it with Rickwood (Field game on Thursday). He was there in spirit."

Melvin said playing in that historic venue in front of 8,332 fans was "impactful for everybody."

"It's been a lot, but it was a lot of fun," he said. Desperately wished we could've won the game, but the experience itself was incredible, something we'll never forget... With all the older Negro League players there, the festivities, I think MLB did a fantastic job. There was a real spotlight on it."

Giants outfielder Mike Yastrzemski said his experience playing at Rickwood Field was "special."

"Obviously, it was a tough emotional time for this entire organization," Yastrzemski said. "To be able to go down there is incredibly special. It's something that needs to happen more often... maybe a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I'm lucky to have had it."

Starting pitcher Jordan Hicks took the loss in Saturday's defeat to the Cardinals. Standing by his locker postgame, Hicks took a moment to reflect on the week it has been for the organization, calling it "eye-opening."

"It's been mixed feelings," Hicks said. "It was tough when I first heard the (Mays) news in Chicago. Got to honor him at Rickwood, celebrate everything, the history of it, just how good a person he was."

Rickwood Field represents both the good and bad in telling the story of baseball history. For one, it was Mays' first baseball team when he turned pro at 17 years old. The unfortunate part that came with it was the racism Black players faced when taking the Rickwood Field diamond.

During Thursday's telecast, Oakland A's legend and Hall of Famer Reggie Jackson gave his thoughts on returning to the field he played in during his Negro League days.

Jackson said coming back is "not easy." He continued to tell the story of the racism he faced in Birmingham in a now-viral clip. "I wouldn't wish it on anybody," the 14-time All-Star and five-time World Series champion said.

The Giants have not won a game since the passing of Mays last Tuesday. San Francisco returns home to Oracle Park for a Monday night matchup against the Chicago Cubs.

McDonald's at Stonestown closes after more than 30 years in San Francisco https://www.kron4.com/news/bay-area/mcdonalds-at-stonestown-closes-after-more-than-30-years-in-san-francisco/ Mon, 24 Jun 2024 00:38:56 +0000 https://www.kron4.com/?p=1830082 SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- A longtime McDonald's location in San Francisco is closing.

The McDonald's at Stonestown Galleria has shut down its doors for good, according to franchise location owner Scott Rodrick. The last day for McDonald's at 255 Winston Drive is on Sunday, June 23.

You would often see the fast food restaurant filled with students -- whether it's from nearby Lowell High School or San Francisco State University. Some loitering, some dining in for a meal. Either way, that McDonald's had been a staple in the neighborhood for three decades.

"It has been a pleasure for my entire team and I to serve the 19th Avenue and Ingleside neighborhoods for more than 30 years," Rodrick wrote in a letter posted on the restaurant entrance. "We are thankful to have been a part of your daily meal routine, either for an Egg McMuffin in the morning or a Happy Meal with the kids after an afternoon of shopping at Stonestown."

Rodrick cited two primary factors in the decision to shut down the location, adding it was a "long and difficult" decision.

The first was disagreement on a lease term with the building's landlord. According to Rodrick, the landlord was "unwilling to negotiate a long term, sensible rent" -- despite his track record of 30 years at that location. He also said the property taxes and shared tenant mall fees reached an all-time high.

Secondly, Rodrick refers to the historically rising costs of operating a restaurant in the city and state. He cited the "poorly timed" California $20 minimum wage for fast food workers that went into effect in April. The franchisee said the law pushes against the operation of his McDonald's restaurant.

"This is a gut wrenching day for my family, our customers and as importantly, our amazing team members," Rodrick wrote in a statement to KRON4.

Employees at the Stonestown location have been offered job opportunities at other nearby McDonald's, Rodrick said. The next closest McDonald's is located at 1201 Ocean Ave.

Police said Ramirez was a theft suspect on Post-Release Supervision (PRCS) in Contra Costa County and had a felony warrant.

When the BPD officer attempted to approach Ramirez, police said he fled on foot to the back of a nearby Target store. The Antioch and Oakley police departments were then contacted to assist in the search, BPD said.

Airtaxi network announces five planned Bay Area locations https://www.kron4.com/news/bay-area/airtaxi-network-announces-five-locations-around-the-bay-area/ Sat, 22 Jun 2024 23:45:41 +0000 https://www.kron4.com/?p=1829548 (KRON) -- The Bay Area is set to introduce a new form of commute. On Thursday, Archer, an electric aircraft company, announced that it would offer an "air mobility network" in South San Francisco, Napa, San Jose, Oakland, and Livermore, replacing one-to-two-hour trips by car with zero-emission, 10-to-20-minute air taxi flights.

According to the manufacturer, their first facility could come as early as the end of 2025.

Archer will look to build a main base at Oyster Point in South San Francisco, connecting it with routes to Napa, San Jose, Oakland, and Livermore. The company will work with real estate giant Kilroy Realty Corp to make the 50-acre Kilroy Oyster Point waterfront campus.

The aircraft company said on its website that it aims to compete against ground-based ride services like Uber or Lyft by creating a service "with a price equivalent" to its own.

Archer’s flagship design, Midnight, is built for a pilot to fly as many as four passengers and charge for just a few minutes between trips.

Aside from the main air taxi port at Oyster Point, Archer and Kilroy intend to create a “Sea Portal”—a renewable energy-powered development that offers electric ferry services for waterfront-based companies.

In June, Archer received its Part 135 from the FAAA, a certificate allowing them to operate their airline commercially. Archer became one of just two eVTOL manufacturers to earn a Part 135 worldwide.

It expects to install electric charging stations at locations in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Miami by next year. The company also intends to add electric chargers to planned air taxi hubs in Dubai and Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates.

Brentwood PD alerts residents of gold bar scam surge https://www.kron4.com/news/bay-area/brentwood-pd-alerts-residents-of-gold-bar-scam-surge/ Sat, 22 Jun 2024 01:52:31 +0000 https://www.kron4.com/?p=1829171 (KRON) -- The Brentwood Police Department is warning its residents of a recent surge in "cash to gold bar" scams, where scammers around the community convince victims to convert their cash into gold bars.

BPD said the scams are conducted by people impersonating U.S. government officials or acting as customer support for "a financial technology company."

According to BPD, the scammers posing as government officials would contact Brentwood residents and claim their financial accounts were hacked. The scammers would then persuade residents to turn their financial assets into gold bars, police said.

Once victims confirm that they've purchased the gold bars, police said the scammers would then send someone out to meet with the victim to collect the bars.

"We want to remind our community to always be aware of these scams, and if something doesn't feel right, then it probably isn't," BPD said. Police asked to call BPD before sending money or giving personal information away.
