SAN FRANCISCO (KRON/NEXSTAR) — Two of the leading Democrats in the race for one of California’s two United States Senate seats held dueling campaign events in San Francisco Sunday night. Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Burbank) held a campaign event in the city that was attended by some of the city’s political heavyweights.
United States House Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi was in attendance and took the stage at the event, which was also attended by San Francisco City Supervisor Aaron Peskin. Pelosi and Peskin have both endorsed Schiff’s campaign in the race to fill the seat long held by the late Sen. Dianne Feinstein.
“San Francisco. Wow,” tweeted Schiff. “So grateful for the greatest Speaker of all time — Speaker Pelosi — for joining us.”
“Let’s go win this thing!”
Rep. Katie Porter (D-Irvine) was also in town Sunday night where she held an event at Manny’s in the Mission.
“Traveling up and down our state, I’ve constantly heard Californians say they want change in Washington,” Porter tweeted. “Today’s stop in San Francisco was no different.”
“Thanks to everyone who came out to learn more about how, by working together, we can shake up the Senate,” she added, invoking her campaign slogan.
Recent polls have seen Schiff holding onto front-runner status while Porter has been looked into a fight for second with leading Republican candidate Steve Garvey. One poll last week, showed Garvey edging Schiff slightly in leading the race.
The other leading Democrat in the running, Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Oakland) has been trailing in fourth place, according to polls.
According to California’s election rules, the top two candidates from Tuesday’s primary, regardless of party affiliation, will face off in November’s general election.
